Temper gives freelancers true flexibility — sign up free, complete a profile, and start working shifts as a barista, sales assistant, order picker, or any of thousands of other roles. The Freelancer App lets workers browse and claim shifts, track earnings, and manage their schedule. The Staff App (Temper Staff) operates under an employment contract model, handling all administrative work — pension contributions, travel reimbursements, and guaranteed pay even on last-minute client cancellations. Businesses use Temper to post shifts, manage flexpools of preferred workers, and integrate with existing HR systems via API.
Built as two dedicated Flutter apps — one for freelance workers (iOS & Android) and one for staff/employed workers (iOS & Android) — with a backend powered by React.js, Next.js, Node.js, and Python. OpenAI drives intelligent shift matching, personalized shift recommendations, and worker-client fit scoring. MongoDB handles all shift, worker, client, and earnings data across thousands of concurrent shifts and users. The platform integrates with major HR and workforce management systems and serves hospitality, retail, logistics, facility services, construction, and horticulture sectors.
The Story
Temper was founded to solve the fundamental mismatch between businesses that need flexible staff and workers who want control over their time. Traditional employment is too rigid; traditional temp agencies too slow and expensive. Temper built a two-sided marketplace that gives workers true autonomy — pick your own shifts, set your own rate, work when you want — while giving businesses instant access to vetted, reliable talent they can deploy within hours. Operating across the UK, Netherlands, and Belgium in sectors including hospitality, retail, logistics, facility services, construction, and horticulture, Temper now lists 20,000+ shifts every single week.
Our Approach
The project required two distinct Flutter apps catering to different work models: the Worker App for freelancers who operate independently with their own VAT or CoC registration, and the Staff App for workers who prefer the security of an employment contract without the admin burden. Both apps are built in Flutter for a unified cross-platform iOS and Android experience. The backend runs on Node.js and Python microservices handling shift lifecycle, worker-client matching, payment processing, pension contributions, and HR integrations. React.js and Next.js power the web platform and business dashboard. OpenAI enables intelligent shift recommendations tailored to each worker's skills, location, and history, as well as automated business matching and flexpool optimization. MongoDB handles all shift, worker, business, and transaction data at scale across multiple countries and sectors.
